Young Raptors Find a Way to Win in the Fourth

It certainly wasn’t the prettiest NBA game of the year and it wasn’t the easy victory the Raptors’ fans were probably expecting.  The Kings were playing without their leading scorer, Tyreke Evans, and were coming in tied for the worst record in the association.  The Raptors were back home and welcomed back some players who were injured.  By all rights, this should have been a much easier game for the Raptors, but they key letting Sacramento back in the game and couldn’t pull away.

The fourth quarter was where things clicked and The Raptors finally pulled away for good.  Andrea Bargnani had one of his better offensive games going 12/19 for 30 points and Demar Derozan looked like he belonged int he big leagues with an awesome 13/20 shooting night and finished with 28.  This is the kind of effort that fans in Toronto want to start seeing from these two guys on a more consistent basis.

Zan For Three

One-Two Punch

Today was one of those games where you saw Bargnani and Derozan take shots and you could just feel they were going to fall every time.  I feel that way often when it comes to Bargnani, but very rarely with Derozan.  Today this combo was deadly.  Derozan took the ball to the rim and Andrea was lights out from the field.  If Derozan couldn’t drive to the basket the ball was sent back out the Bargnani who would calmly drain a long two or a three.

Andrea Bargnani was money from pretty much everywhere as th Raptors defeated the Kings at the ACC of Sunday.

When all the dust settles after the trade deadline and even later in the summer, these are the only two players that I can say with near-certainty will be a part of this team going forward.  They are players that Colangelo and the MLSE brass see a lot of potential in.  Bargnani is starting to bust out of the shadow of Chris Bosh that he was in for the last few years and is emerging as one of, if not the best player from his draft class.  Derozan is a player that everyone has been waiting to explode.  It would seem that we my be on the cusp of that moment right now.

These two players were dominant today. They shot the ball with confidence and demanded it in their hands.  They both look like strong pieces of the puzzle going forward.  If this year results in nothing else, I hope it results in these two players becoming clear-cut starters on this team for he forseeable future.

Somethin’ Brewin’ in the T-Dot?

Now I know the Carmelo Anthony trade to New Jersey seems to be imminent, heck it could even be happening right now for all I know.  I think that trade is basically just waiting to happen and everyone knows it.

Less obviously, there seems to be something brewing in Raptorland.  Bryan Colangelo has been eerily quiet for most of the season, heck, he’s even harder and harder to spot at the ACC during games.  Like a deadly jungle cat, Bryan Colangelo is at his most cunning when he is silent.  He hasn’t been saying much lately and the chances of a trade seem to be likely, in my opinion.

I’m not a beat writer.  I don’t know anyone in the MLSE brass.  I’m not clairvoyant, but I sense something is up.

The Raptors waived Ronald Dupree and sent Soloman Alabi back to the D-League.  Neither move is earth shattering or even surprising.  But it does leave the Raptors with open spaces on their roster.

The Raptors have most of the Trade exception acquired in the Chris Bosh deal still available to trade and must do so by the end of the season or they lose that money.

The Raptors also possess a number of expiring contracts that could be very attractive to teams trying to rebuild themselves.  Peja Stojakovic is the one contract that seem most likely to move or be bought-out so that he can take his game to a contender for the playoff push.

The Raptors also possess some savvy veterans (Reggie Evans, Leandro Barbosa) that could help a contending team.  Neither of those players come with long commitments or high salaries, which could make them even more attractive.

They also have two first round draft picks in this coming draft and could use either or both to package in a trade for another asset in order to sweeten the pot.

That’s a lot of assets that have values that will peek at the trade deadline.  It makes a lot of sense if Bryan Colangelo isn’t so visible because he’s busy getting deals done. Hopefully he’s also getting his own deal done with MLSE as well.

Mark my words, something is going on in Raptorland.  I smell a trade coming down soon.

Where’s the Noise?

Every game the Raptor mascot finds ways, using his bag of tricks, to get the audience into a frenzy.  T-shirts, contests, shakin’ it behind a security guard, and other various ways of revving the crowd up.  I don’t know what it is this season, I’ve been to quite a few games, but the atmosphere isn’t as lively as it used to be.

True, Chris Bosh left in the offseason and he was not replaced by a marquee name player.  There were no major free agent pickups like Jermaine O’neal or Hedo Turkoglu to get the city talking Raptors.

But, despite the obvious reasons, the crowd just didn’t seem that into it today.  They got to witness a close, playoff like atmosphere (even if the competitors won’t reach the playoffs this year) where the home team captured victory on late plays.  And still the excitement seemed somewhat muted.  The biggest cheer, save for perhaps the big Bargnani three ball in the fourth quarter, was for four visiting Blue Jay players that handed out signed Raptor balls.

Demar Derozan and the Raptors celebrate a strong victory in front of their home town fans.

The Raptors haven’t made the playoffs the last few years and the excitement surrounding the team is at a low point to say the least, but this is an entertaining group of players to watch.

True, there is no Vince Carter or Chris Bosh.  No young superstar that takes your breath away, even in a loss.  No JYD or Charles Oakley to leave it all on the floor in ways only they could.

What do you need Raptor fans?  What will make you cheer and scream the way you used to.  What will bring that electric energy back the ACC?

I suppose winning is the only formula, but if you’re down at the ACC watching the games, you’ll be able to see that winning isn’t that far away.

Zan of the Game

Demar Derozan

Both Derozan and Bargnani had monster games on the offensive end of the floor, but Derozan gets it because he is really developing his confidence.  This is a kid that is making some strides this year to become a solid, solid NBA player.  He may not peak this year or even next, but you can tell this is a young player that is ready to take his game to the next level.  Raptor fans are going to enjoy watching this young player fill it up at the ACC for the forseeable future.  Tonight was further proof that Demar is ready to take flight.

Not Zan of the Game

Linas Kleiza

Linas is a good role player and a solid contributor off the bench, most of the time, but he has had a recent tendency to take shots outside the flow of the offense and puts his team in a hole.  Today Kleiza had a rough day at the office.  He seemed to think it was his job to shoot every time he got the ball.  His defense on the other end of the floor was nearly non-existent and he doesn’t look like he is on the same page as he rest of his teammates.  I like Kleiza’s game a lot, when he’s on the ball, but lately. he has looked completely off his game.

No California Love for Raps

You could forgive the Raptors if they weren’t necessarily looking forward to their Western Road trip.  Every year the Raptors seem to get caught napping in the sun.  At least once, and sometimes twice in a season, a crucial West Coast trip puts the team behind the eight ball.  Maybe it’s the sun, the time off or the hot women in bikinis (and who could blame them really) but every year the Raptors seem to go on a crucial Western trip and lose their focus coming home empty-handed.

This is the time of year the Raptors need to take advantage of their opponents.  Teams like Sacramento and the Lakers are not playing at 100% at this point in the regular season and the Raptors need to seize these opportunities.  Toronto could very well come into a Western Coast trip and surprise a still rusty team and add up some extra W’s.  At the end of the season, you look back at these opportunities and think “what if?”.  It is important to tally up as many early W’s as possible as they only become harder and harder to come by as the season goes on. This is one of those wins that will feel so much worse later on in the year when wins mean the difference between playoffs and lottery.

The Zan for Three

Early Energy, Late Nap

The Raptors came out like a steamroller in the first five minutes of the game.  I cannot remember the last time I saw the Raptors come out of the tunnel with that much pounce.  They drove to the rim, got to the line and scored the majority of their buckets in the paint.  Where was it in the fourth though?

There is always worry that on the first night of a West Coast trip a team will have some fatigue, but the Raps came out like Gangbusters.  They had a 33-16 advantage after the first quarter, but what was more telling was the way in which they did it.  The Raptors got to the line 13 times in the first quarter.  Points were scored in transition and the team wasn’t afraid to get dirty.

In the second half however they forced the issue (Jarrett Jack I’m looking at you), they let Evans have a field day and finished with lazy jump shots allowing the Kings to battle back.  By the time the fourth quarter rolled around the Raps had nothing left in the tank.  It was like all of a sudden they realized it was midnight in Toronto and they had to work in the morning….oh wait, that was me.

Reggie Freaking Evans

I can’t stop writing about this guy.  I openly questioned his starting spot but after three straight games in double-digit rebounds , don’t I have egg on my face?  He is simply playing great ball right now.  He lifted his team early in this one with 10 boards in the first quarter and brought the energy back when he re-entered the game.  I don’t always like his game, but so far this season I cannot find a bad thing to say about one Reginald Jamaal Evans.

Tyreke Evans and the Kings waited and stalked the Raptors like a carnivore, eventually catching their prey late in the fourth. The Raptors never knew what hit them.

Finish them!

When you’re up 17 points you have to look for the jugular and go for it.  Tonight the Raptors gave the Kings a second life and with a player as gifted as Tyreke Evans running the show you need to finish a team off when you get the chance.  The Raptors didn’t and they got burned, absolutely burned.

Plus the Foul…

Almost Defense?

Is there such a thing?  The Raptors deflected balls and broke plays up many times in the game, only to have them end up in the hands of a Sacramento player.  The Raptors started the game playing very aggressive and took a commanding lead off of their defensive effort, but they also lost because of defensive miscues, bad shot selection late in the game and shear dumb-luck.  There will be lots for Jay Triano and PJ Carlesimo to be happy about, but they will also be wondering how their defensive oriented team let a 17 point lead slip through the cracks.

Zan of the Night

Omar Casspi

I know much will be made of Tyreke playing while sick and getting 28 points or of Reggie’s night of endless rebounds, but Omar was the difference.  He hit every big three a player possibly could and each one felt like a dagger in my chest.  That is what you want out of a shooter.  Casspi was 50% from 3-pt land and frightened me every time he had the ball.  This win is on him.

Not Zan of the Night

Leo Rautins

I’m not a fan of games that are called by Leo.  I love Jack Armstrong and I will fully admit my bias.  Leo knows his game, but he just doesn’t have a voice that makes you feel anything other than boredom and indifference.  Add to the fact that Samuel Dalembert was in the game and we had to listen to Team Canada anecdotes all night.  It used to be overwhelming man love he bestowed on Dalembert, but after Samuel’s team Canada fallout, it has now become cheap shots.  Not needed on a Raptors broadcast.  For Shame!  Seriously though, the only thing worse than watching the Raptors lose a game in the dying minutes is listening to Leo Rautins call it. Great start to the Sportsnet One Era!  Yikes!

Oh California!  You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

Raptors in Free Fall and Bosh is Pissed

Curry has been a revelation this year and continued his strong rookie season with a big win over the Raptors.

It was like deja vu all over again for the Raptors.  A strong first half from the Raptors saw the team carry a four point lead into half time.  Then the third quarter reared its ugly head.  The Raptors gave up 43 on Wednesday night in an embarrassing loss to Sacramento and followed it up by giving up 41 to the third worst team in the association.  The defense disappeared, the offensive sets went nowhere and the Raptors found consistency out of no one.  Chris Bosh, the teams best player, couldn’t help but notice the lack of effort from himself and his teammates.   “Act like you care, you know,” he said. “We need to do the things that win, we don’t do the things that win.”  Tough love from the teams’ best player who seemed absolutely enraged after the game.

There’s reason to be pissed.  The Raptors are now treading dangerously close  to falling out of playoff contention.  They sit in the 8th spot at the moment, only one and half games ahead of Chicago, for the final playoff spot in the East.  They must come together quickly or risk wasting a season that had the makings of something special.

The Zan for Three

Star Power

If you want to win games consistently in this league, your best players have to step up and lead the way.  The Raptors didn’t get that kind of effort from their stars and the Warriors did, plain and simple.  Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry and Corey Maggette went off on the Raptors scoring 31, 35, and 20 respectively.  Chris Bosh scored 24 for the Raptors but  Hedo Turkoglu scored a whopping 4pts, Andrea Bargnani added 11 and Jarrett Jack tossed in 7.  If the Raptors have any design of playing playoff basketball they need to start getting production from their main guys.  In a playoff atmosphere it will be these players that will  be called on to lead.  But there won’t be any playoffs to play in if the players don’t start stepping up now.

Rookie Class

What a great rookie class this year turned out to be.  Jennings, Curry and Evans are in a sprint to the finish for Rookie of the Year.  Evans looked great on Wednesday and Curry had his opportunity to impress tonight against the Raptors.  He took advantage of terrible defensive positioning and got to the rim at will.  He made shots and got his teammates involved as well.   Curry looks like a player the Warriors should build around in the coming years.  He just has the mentality of a winner and isn’t afraid to take big shots.  He has many qualities of his father, former Raptor Dell Curry, that make him a dangerous player to play against. A great mix of skill and smarts.

Piss and Vinegar

Good teams go through bad spurts all the time.  It is impossible in the long NBA season not to go through stretches where the team doesn’t play to their potential and ability.  The Raptors have chosen the wrong time to play their worst ball of the season and someone needs to do something about it.  Chris Bosh looked downright angry after the game and the Raptors could use a little bit more of that fire.  I have been waiting all season for someone to call the team out and take charge of the locker room.  Call all the team meetings you want, fly in Colangelo to talk to the team if you like, but something or someone has to light a fire under the players.  Tonight Chris Bosh called his teammates out.  It was long overdue but someone had to do it.  Someone has to do the dirty work of reminding this team that they are not doing the things that need to be done to win.  Let’s see if this can ignite a fire in that dressing room.  I expect an angry squad on Sunday night in Portland.

Towel.

Zan of the Night

Stephen Curry

He is looking every bit a star this year.  He has ice in his veins and has qualities of a leader at this young stage of his career.  He shot the lights out tonight and propelled his team to, what ended up being, an easy victory.  He has the makings of a star in this league.

Not Zan of the Night

Take your pick. Every Raptor, outside of maybe Calderon, played horribly at some point in the ball game.  Hedo Turkoglu is an obvious target with his four point night.  He didn’t score a single point after the first quarter.  The $53 million dollar man is looking lost and lethargic.  He personifies everything that is wrong with this team right now.  They are not playing with energy, not making smart decisions, aren’t playing defense and don’t seem to care.  He was signed to be a leader.  To be an example.  And to get us to the playoffs.   He hasn’t led all season. He is setting the wrong example as his laissez-faire attitude seems to be catching on.  And there is a very real chance we might miss the playoffs.  Not acceptable.

The Kings Destroy The Raptors, As The Team Searches For Answers.

The writing was on the wall. After playing their hearts out against the Lakers the night before, one might assume the Raptors would come into Sacramento and play like a team on fire. Desperate for a win, to stop their slide down the Eastern Conference standings. Sadly, just the opposite occurred.

The team was outplayed and out-executed by a spirited Sacramento squad. And after the Kings posted 43 points in the third quarter, the game was effectively over. Leaving the Raptors to look long and hard in the mirror, as they continue to drop in the standings.

CB4 and getting to the line

Chris Bosh had a bad game tonight. Sacramento took away his drive for the majority of the game forcing Chris to make shots. Unfortunately for us, his jumper was off, shooting 30 percent for the night.

The concern though is how little we’ve seen Chris get to line since he’s returned – averaging 3 attempts per game. That’s 6 attempts lower than his season average. A remarkable drop off.

Tyreke Evans and the rookie race.

Evans makes tough shot after tough shot. The kid has got it. The game seems to be effortless for him. This season, as a whole, has been one of the best Rookie of the Year races I can remember. Maybe not the flashiest. It’s a three horse race between Curry, Evans and Jennings. And for my money Evans gets it. Before I saw him tonight, I would have said Curry.

Is the ship is sinking?

My writing partner put it best. If the ship was pointed in the wrong direction over the last few games, it’s most certainly sprung a leak and is starting to sink. It’s gut check time. Not sure if it’s going to take a team meeting, or a tongue lashing from Jay, but something has to be done to turn this second half around. They did it before and they can do it again. Maybe a little positive thinking is key.

Not Zan of the Night

Chris Bosh

Tonight was one of his worst games of the season. He hasn’t quite looked himself since returning from his ankle injury.

Zan of the Night

Tyreke Evans

His first career triple double. The Raptors couldn’t find a way to stop him tonight. Although, not many teams have.
